Because pearls are an organic gemstone, they are softer and more delicate. Which means that they can be easily scratched, cracked, and damaged. In additions, substances such as perfume and hair spray--and even natural body oils and perspiration--can dull pearls' luster or cloud their brilliance.

When applying perfume, hair spray, or any other cosmetics, always apply these materials prior to putting pearls on. This will minimize the amount the pearls are subjected to the chemicals. After wearing your pearls, remove them and wipe down with a soft damp cloth to remove any traces of cosmetic products or natural body oils.

Due to the delicacy of the pearls, they should be stored separately, away from hard jewelry items that could scratch or otherwise damage the surface of the pearls. Pearls should never be tossed on top of or next to other gems in a jewelry box. Its a good suggestion to store the pearls wrapped in a soft cloth or in a soft-lined container, pouch, or jewelry box.

Besides being soft, pearls can easily be damaged by chemicals in perfume, vinegar, or lemon juice. Dry air can also damage pearls. Most safety deposit vaults have very dry air and can damage pearls.

Because of their delicate nature, special care must be taken when cleaning:

  • Never use an ultrasonic cleaner
  • Never steam-clean pearls
  • Never use (or expose pearls) to dish or wash detergent, bleaches, powdered cleansers.
  • Do not wear pearls when their string is wet. Wet strings stretch and attract dirt, which is very hard to remove.
  • Do not hang pearls to dry.
  • Take your pearls off when applying cosmetics, hair spray, and perfume, or when showering or swimming.

Cleaning Pearls

After you wear pearls, just wipe them off with a soft cloth of chamois, which may be dry or damp. This will prevent dirt from accumulating and keep perspiration, which is slightly acid from eating away at the pearl nacre. You can even use a drop of olive oil on the cloth to help maintain their luster.
